Comedian Gervais defends himself against right-wing populism allegations

LOS ANGELES. British comedian Ricky Gervais has defended himself against allegations by American media that he made “right-wing” jokes when moderating the Golden Globe Awards. “How the hell can it be right-wing to mess up big corporations and the richest, most privileged people in the world?”

In his moderation on Sunday , Gervais particularly criticized stars who preached the moral code to society, but who themselves worked for unethical companies. “The companies you work with are Apple, Amazon, Disney – if Isis started a streaming service you would call your agent directly, wouldn’t you?”

“Jokes, not wars”

He then called on the award winners to forego political appeals in their acceptance speeches. “If you win, come up here, take your little trophy, thank your agent and God, and then fuck off,” he said. “You are in no position to teach the public about anything. You don’t know anything about the real world, ”he called to the visibly shocked Hollywood greats. “Most of you spent less time at school than Greta Thunberg.”

Unlike the country’s major newspapers – at the forefront of the Los Angeles Times – Gervais received a lot of approval for his appearance, especially on social networks. “Best reaction I’ve ever received,” he said on Twitter. Nevertheless, he was glad that it was over now and that he could turn to his real job. He closed the tweet with the sentence: “Make jokes, not wars.”
